Itineraries

I think it is important to define the Swahili word safari, which means a journey. To those of us who make our living in the bush, ‘on safari’ means what it was like many years ago when we experienced the wild at first hand - both day and night.

These days the majority of people who visit Africa experience tours, staying in large hotels and only venturing out for two hours or so  at each end of the day, rushing from one animal to another. With these ‘safaris’ the opportunities for good game viewing or photography are severely limited by the standard mini-bus game drives where groups of up to eight people or more share a vehicle. Only one or two will have a good viewpoint and time is usually limited, both by the driver’s need to complete a drive within a prescribed time, and by the attention span of those other passengers who are not enthusiastic animal watchers.

Please don’t misunderstand my description as, after all, we all have different requirements. A tour is a great, but basic, introduction to Africa. A number of my clients get the African bug on such a tour, but they then want to return to experience the real thing, to spend time immersed in the culture, observing and perhaps photographing the game. They want to experience the wild at first hand from dawn to dusk!

The emphasis of my safaris is seeing and participating and the time spent on game drives for a two week safari is about 130 hours, the equivalent of about 35 days with most operators - and remember, this does not include what we see in camp.

Although my safaris are run to an itinerary, this is totally flexible to suit the activity of the day. We may, for example, decide to stay on at one of the camps if the game activity has been superb, or we want to see that elusive black rhino. After all, it is your safari and, as I say countless times, we must make the most of the opportunities as they arise. Don’t say, “I wish we had....”

Please read the itineraries for the various safaris that I offer and rest assured that which ever one you choose you will have the experience of a lifetime! From the Booking page you can click on a title to see the outline plan of the currently available safaris. Please feel free to Contact me if you wish to discuss any aspect of your safari before or after booking.

One of my clients has made an exciting and informative DVD which gives a very good flavour of the sort of experiences you will have as well as a description of our camps in the bush. If you would like a free copy please fill in the details below:

Thanks once again for the fantastic safari last year. We enjoyed it so much, and barely a week goes past without remembering an occasion or telling someone about an experience. We still can’t believe we saw the scenery, towns, and wildlife that we did !
